Hope College aims to be become first animal testing free college of Nepal

Kathmandu, November 28, 2011 - Today AWNN launched its Stop Animal Testing Campaign in medical colleges by organising a workshop introducing humane alternatives at Hope College of Lalitpur.

Campaigners showed different kinds of software to be used in medical science without experimenting on live animals. The software is considered as effective as live animal testing.

In Nepal animal testing goes unmonitored as there is no law or government agency to control the experiments. Medical, nursery and pharmacy colleges use frogs, rats and squirrels during practicals. Medical institutes use various kinds of animals for testing, including goats, sheep and rabbits, including outdated tests which are banned in most parts of the world,

Animal labs and dissection in schools are slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past. In America most medical schools do not require participation in animal labs. In Britain animals are no longer used to demonstrate medical procedures. In Asia many progressive universities have changed their syllabi and opted for humane, scientific teaching methods. In India, in 1997, the Delhi High Court ruled that every student has the right to a humane alternative to dissection.

AWNN lobbbies for the replacement of live testing by modern software at all colleges of Nepal. Hope College is leading the movement by replacing animal testing by software in the near future.

AWNN saddened by gruesome buffalo slaughter in Achham

Kathmandu, November 22, 2011 – Hundreds of young men chasing, biting and hacking 40 buffaloes to death. That was the scene at a festival held in Gajra VDC at Achham district last Thursday. AWNN says the mass chasing and killings of these gentle working animals is gruesome and ‘has nothing to do with culture or religion’.

Each year after Haribodhani Ekadasi, during full moon, Gajra VDC celebrates Dauthegada’s Dashain, a festival marked by large numbers of animal sacrifice.

“On Thursday fourty buffaloes and two hundred goats have been slaughtered,” said Birendra Khadka coordinator of organizing committee. The village has only 340 households which means the animal killings require a high investments from the villagers.

According to Khadka this year the number of slaughtered buffaloes was reduced from last year, when over 50 buffaloes were hunted down. The villagers believe the more often ‘devotees’ bite and hack at the buffaloes, the more satisfied Barbadevi Mai Goddess will be.

This is the biggest animal sacrifice event in the district, visited by thousands of people from Achham and neighbouring districts. Many children watch the ritual in which buffaloes die a slow, agonizing death. Afterwards the area is covered with blood and dead animal bodies.

AWNN speaks out against Dhankuta dog poisoning

Kathmandu, November 22, 2011 – AWNN is upset to learn that the poisoning of dogs continues in various parts of the country. On November 7, former joint secretary Kumar Shrestha, who was transferred to the Dhankuta District Administrative Office in June, ordered the killing of over 120 dogs in his new hometown.

The dogs were captured during a weekly fair where canines generally come to scavenge for left over food. As per the order of Shrestha, the dogs were poisoned, possibly with strychnine. Many Dhankuta residents are upset about the brutal killings. “I heard that many dogs were poisoned in Bhaktapur earlier this year but I never expected this to happen in my town as well,” said one Dhankuta resident.

AWNN: “Welfare of zoo animals compromised during renovations”

Kathmandu, November 22, 2011 – “The welfare of zoo animals should not be compromised during renovations,” says Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN). The network is concerned about the conditions of wildlife kept in temporary shelters while renovations take place at the Central Zoo.

Although the network welcomes the Central Zoo’s 5-year renovation and construction plan, it says various species suffer considerably in temporary shelters. “One example is Shiva the tiger, who is kept in a small, dark, outdated enclosure since many months and is continuously being harassed by visitors. Various other species are forced to live in small cages too,” says Santosh Khatiwada, campaign coordinator with AWNN.

AWNN presently is rating the zoo’s enclosures according to Zoo Check, a welfare assessment developed by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). According to this audit, around 50% of all enclosures fail to meet the minimum standards. Among those are the enclosures of small mammals such as jungle cat, jackal, hyena, wolf, civets and leopard. “We are especially concerned about animals held in outdated enclosures dating back to 1932, and which are visible stressed. We also have great concerns about the mammals and birds like storks, cranes and pheasants kept in the circular enclosures in the northern section of the zoo,” says Khatiwada.

AWNN says renovations are long overdue but adds that a long term solution is needed for the large mammals kept at the Central Zoo, which houses too many species in a relatively small area. The government since 2008 has talked about opening an international standard zoo somewhere outside Kathmandu. “The welfare Nepal’s majestic wildlife is severely compromised by cramming them in a congested place in the heart of a city. They deserve to be kept in a more natural environment in a spacious rehabilitation center cum zoo,” AWNN says.

The campaigners urge the zoo authorities to complete the new enclosures as soon as possible and to improve the living conditions of animals kept in temporary shelters.

The renovations at the zoo aim to build new habitats for tiger, monkey and birds and are estimated to cost Rs. 2.5 million.

Smuggled parrots and puppy rescued by AWNN

Kathmandu, 15 November, 2011 - Today AWNN, with the help of Balkhu police station, rescued four parrots and a puppy from India bird smugglers. The birds were taken to Animal Nepal's animal sanctuary while the puppy was adopted by kind police officers.

The parrots and puppy were kept in tiny cages. The birds were being sold on the streets of Kathmandu, while the puppy was destined to be smuggled to India, to be sold there as a 'Himalayan breed'. Roots and Shoots and Animal Nepal rescued 42 such puppies in December last year.

The parrots are being rehabilitated at Chobar Animal Sanctuary. The police officers decided to adopt the puppy, which now guards the police station of Balkhu.

AWNN stresses the need for a bird rescue centre in Kathmandu Valley. "Due to increased bird smuggle and a greater awareness, a growing number of birds is being confiscated. We have rehabilitated birds on three occasions, but our animal sanctuary does not have the right facilities. Ideally the government will initiate various wildlife rehab centres, including a bird centre," says Lucia de Vries, Volunteer Director at Animal Nepal.

Monkey kept in tiny cage rescued

Kathmandu, 11 November 2011 - A baby monkey which was kept in a tiny cage as part of an 'educational mini zoo' by Anal Jyoti Boarding School (Sunakothi) has been rescued by Roots and Shoots Nepal. After receiving vaccinations at Animal Nepal's animal sanctuary, campaigners took the monkey to its new home at the R&S rehab centre in Nagarkot.

The baby monkey was kept in a small cage, together with some birds and rabbits, 'to educate the children about the importance of animals', according to school authorities. After regular visits by animal welfare campaigners, the school management agreed to hand over the monkey. The pet monkey was self harming and showed aggressive behaviour.

After receiving vaccinations at Animal Nepal's animal sanctuary, the monkey was taken to the rehab centre in Nagarkot. Although the monkey probably cannot be rehabilitated in the wild, it now has a large enclosure, hopefully shared with other monkeys in the future.

AWNN urges schools and other organisations not to start mini zoos. "Mini zoos seem like a nice idea but they are inhumane and illegal. In reality they create the opposite effect: instead of teaching visitors about animal welfare, mini zoos endorse animal cruelty. The survival rate of animals in mini zoos is very low and no government authority ever monitors their conditions," says Santosh Khatiwada, AWNN campaign coordinator.

AWNN's campaign against hunting in Kanchenjunga a success

Kathmandu, November 4, 2011 - AWNN today welcomed the decision of the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation not to allow the hunting of blue sheep in Kanchenjunga. The network congratulates the Minister 'for not selling out Nepal's precious wildlife'.

The rejected proposal of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) made provisions for hunters to kill Himalayan Blue Sheep in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. AWNN campaigners on July 24 organised a demonstration at the Department, and warned the government against the dire consequences of allowing hunting in Kanchenjunga.

Last week a letter and petition signed by over 2300 people was handed over to the Ministry.

Today the Ministry rejected the hunting proposal stating that hunting blue sheep cannot be allowed because it is the prey species of the highly endangered Snow Leopard and it does not harm people or livestock. According to the Ministry allowing hunting in Kanchenjunga would create a precedence, with other conservation areas in the country wanting to open hunting reserves as well.

Kanchenjunga area has been recognised as one of the 200 eco regions and a Gift to the Earth by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

AWNN campaigners today welcomes the decision and congratulated the Minister for taking a stand for conservation. "Thank you for not selling out Nepal's precious wildlife but instead showing a commitment to the conservation efforts taking place in protected areas across the country," said campaign coordinator Santosh Khatiwada.

AWNN launches novel approach to discourage animal sacrifice

Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) has launched a novel approach to promote vegetarian offerings instead of animal sacrifice. The network has produced a map of Kathmandu Valley, showing temples in red and green colours. The 'red temples' are those where animal sacrifice is practiced. The 'green temples' have banned the killing of animals and promote vegetarian offerings. The map, headed by the slogan “Stop Animal Sacrifice – Promote Vegetarian Offerings”, has been produced by AWNN in cooperation with Vedic Society.

According to the map, each year millions of animals are sacrificed in Nepal. “Apart from known sacrifice methods like throat slitting and beheading, extreme forms of blood sacrifices take place including the burning, skinning and the removal of hearts from live animals. Generally animals witness the killing of fellow beings,” the map reads.

Viewers are invited to support the Stop Animal Sacrifice Campaign by introducing vegetarian offerings in their families and neighborhoods and to write letters to the government, army as well as organizing committees.

Durga urges devotees to stop animal sacrifice

Kathmandu, September 28, 2010 – This morning goddess Durga failed to stop the sacrifice of five buffalo calves by the Nepal Army. Her appeal to the Nepal Army to release the calves fell on deaf ears.

The actress goddess appeared at Badrakali Temple, urging devotees to replace blood sacrifices with vegetarian offerings.

The ‘goddess’ demonstrated devotees how to sacrifice pumpkins and coconuts at Badrakali Temple. “I do not need animal blood. Please offer me vegetarian sacrifices,” the goddess said before breaking a coconut in front of the Badrakali image.

The ‘goddess’ visited five buffalo calves which were brought to the temple by the army for sacrifice. She urged the army representatives to release the animals and offered them a pumpkin and coconut as an alternative offering. “All animals are my family. You have no authority to kill them,” the ‘goddess’ argued.

According to campaign coordinator Santosh Khatiwada the calves were malnourished while one of them was suffering from an infection.

A gathering of campaigners supported the goddess Durga (played by an actress from Shilpee Theater) by handing out leaflets and stickers. They also sacrificed kubindos and coconuts, in a ritual that according to the campaigners has a firm basis in the country’s ancient traditions.

The puja is part of novel campaign against animal sacrifices in Nepal. In campaign was launched by Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) in 2009, on the eve of Gadhimai festival. The campaign is supported by a growing number of spiritual and society leaders, including the well known comedian duo MAHA.

The network members are requesting the political leaders, army and police to cancel state funded animal sacrifices during Dasain. “Nepal is the world’s key implementers of animal sacrifice, a practice that promotes superstition and violence, drains the poor and prevents Nepal from becoming a truly advanced country. Decapitating a bleating buffalo or goat should not be the symbol of the Nepali civilization,” AWNN urges.

AWNN upset about dog poisoning in Bhaktapur

Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) is deeply upset by the recent strychnine poisoning of around 200 community dogs by Bhaktapur municipality. AWNN lobbies for a total ban on dog poisoning and condemns authorities which continue to use inhumane, dangerous and ineffective methods to address overpopulation.

What is even more shocking is that the strychnine poison was provided by the Zoonoses Unit of Epidemiology Disease Control Division (EDCD), the government body in charge of mass vaccination campaigns funded by animal welfare organisations!

AWNN wants to thank Bhaktapur Animal Welfare Society (BAWS) for saving and euthanizing some of the dogs and standing up against their local governments.

Contrary to what many believe, the number of dogs does not go down after poisoning. Within half a year the population recovers and often even increases. For this poisoned dogs die an agonizing death which can take as long as 8-10 hours. Strychnine can be washed away during monsoon and cause many other casualties.

In Nepal, humane, effective solutions have been introduced over a decade ago. The only scientific solution to overpopulation is spaying and vaccinating female dogs. Vaccinating pet dogs should be made mandatory. Nepal is more than ready for a long term solution to stray dog problems!

AWNN organises protest against hunting reserve

Kathmandu, July 24, 2011 – Today around 100 campaigners associated with Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) demonstrated against turning Kanchenjunga Conservation Area into a hunting reserve. “It will be disaster for the precious wildlife of Kanchenjunga when hunters are allowed into the area,” said Pramada Shah, chair of AWNN.

The government recently announced its plan to provide licenses to hunters to kill Himalayan Blue Sheep in the remote area. AWNN organized a protest in front of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) at Babar Mahal, Kathmandu.

In a discussion with department officials, the campaigners warned the government against the dire consequences of allowing hunting in Kanchenjunga.

"Government and conservation organizations spent millions of dollars to protect its Himalayan flag species, the Snow Leopard. The focus has been on protecting its prey species, including Blue Sheep. That is why it doesn’t make any sense to allow hunting Blue Sheep for the purpose of so called conservation,” said Manoj Gautam, executive member of AWNN, who called the hunting deal ‘an unethical and shameful act’.

According to Shah, little of the income from hunting is invested in wildlife conservation. “Instead of handing over our parks to hunters we should invest in ecotourism which benefits both people and wildlife. Nepal has been given much credit for developing the Annapurna Conservation Area using a community-based protected area approach. We will continue to receive international credit if we develop Kanchenjunga along the same lines,” said Shah.

Research has shown that most tourists prefer countries where animals can be viewed in the wild and where hunting is banned. When wildlife is being hunted down, wildlife lovers can no longer observe the animals easily. The animals shy away, or become aggressive and charge humans.

AWNN campaigners will continue to protest the government’s decision until it is reversed.

Stop trophy hunting in Nepal, says AWNN

Hunters pay US$ 20,000 for their kill but where does the money go?

The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) strongly opposes the assignment of a second hunting reserve. Trophy hunting is NOT something Nepal should promote and be proud of. Himalayan Thar and Himalayan Blue Sheep are among Nepal’s finest animal species. The income from hunting these beautiful animals are minor compared to the potential income from trekking and wildlife- and ecotourism, which have shown a tremendous growth in the past decade.

Most tourists prefer countries where animals can be viewed in the wild and where senseless killing is banned. When wildlife is being hunted down, wildlife lovers can no longer observe the animals easily. The animals shy away, or become aggressive and charge humans.

Species like Blue Sheep and Thar are part of the elusive snow leopard's food chain. It does not make sense to invest heavily in the conservation of the highly endangered snow leopard while at the same time allowing the hunting of its prey. The government needs to realise this and stop trophy hunting immediately. Instead it should promote Kanchenjunga as a unique trekking, heritage and ecotourism destination, spreading the benefits among local communities, tour operators and authorities.

Animal's precious wildlife should not be sacrificed for the benefits of a handful of rich trophy hunters and their beneficiaries.

The Kanchenjunga area has been selected as one of the 200 eco regions recognized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The government's conservation efforts were applauded by WWF by declaring Kanchenjunga a Gift to the Earth, the organisation's highest accolade.

AWNN hands over Animal Welfare Act to parliamentary committee

Kathmandu, June 5, 2011 – The Animal Welfare Network Nepal wants to thank those who responded to our Facebook campaign People Unite for Animals.

Today AWNN handed over an Animal Welfare Act to Shanta Chaudhary, Chair of the Natural Resource Committee. Campaigners made passionate speeches and said they would continue the campaign until Nepal’s animals are protected and respected.

“We are the only voice animals have, and all of us here today must make a commitment to speak up for the rights of animals,” said Pramada Shah, Chair of AWNN.

Actress Mira Shah described how injured cows are rejected by the country’s gaushala’s (cow shelters). She blamed the Department of Roads for ignoring the plight of stray cows. “It seems we are losing our dharma and compassion. We always talk about human rights but what about those who are not even considered worthy of basic care and respect?” asked Mira Shah.

Parliamentarian Chaudhary said she would promote the act endorsed by AWNN and use the expertise of the network to improve Nepal’s laws related to animals. The proposed act is based on the internationally recognized Five Freedoms of Animals and introduces an Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee as well as penalties for abusers.

Kathmandu, June 5, 2011 – The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN), on the occasion of World Environment Day, has organized a Facebook campaign to lobby for the protection of animals. ‘People Unite for Animals’ has drawn over 200 participants. The campaigners today will hand over a draft Animal Welfare Act to Shanta Chaudhary, Chair of the Natural Resource Committee.

The campaigners will present a draft Animal Welfare Act which has been endorsed by AWNN. The act is based on the internationally recognized Five Freedoms of Animals and introduces an Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee as well as penalties for abusers.

The campaigners say animals are an integral part of the environment and that without legal protection cruelty against animals will go unabated.

According to AWNN, Nepal is one of the few countries in the world without an Animal Welfare Act. “This means that animals can be abused without anyone being able to stop it. The police refuse to file cases against abusers and animal welfare campaigners fail to get legal support,” says Pramada Shah, chair of AWNN.

Campaigner Manoj Gautam and Toby Rana argue that animals are sentient beings, who deserve to be protected and respected. “In the long run animal cruelty such as overpopulation and neglect of stray dogs, the cruel transportation and inhumane killing of food animals, the poaching of wildlife, cruelty in the name of religion and culture, and the abuse of working animals will give Nepal a bad name and impact its position in the global community," say Gautam and Rana.

The campaigners urge the government to include a clause on animals in the new constitution and the amendment of existing laws that endorse cruelty. “One of the first acts that need to be changed is the Local Governance Act which allows municipalities to poison stray dog at their whim,” argues Shah.

According to the campaigners, Nepal needs to be inspired by the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights (UDAR) which is supported by various governments across the world and will be tabled at the UN General Assembly. UDAR states that “We do not accept that a difference in species alone (any more than a difference in race) can justify wanton exploitation or oppression in the name of science or sport, or for use as food, for commercial profit or for other human ends.”

AWNN members join hands to save lives of rescued birds

May 18, 2011 - AWNN members Roots and Shoots and Animal Nepal today joined hands to save the lives of 180 birds. The birds were rescued in a raid conducted by Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) and Roots and Shoots (R&S) on Buddha Jyanti, yesterday. The birds will be rehabilitated at Animal Nepal’s Chobar Animal Sanctuary. The non-indigenous species will be handed over to the Central Zoo.

On May 17, when Buddha’s birthday and enlightenment was widely celebrated in Nepal, BCN and R&S, with the consent of the District Forest Officer, raided the homes of three traders based in Bouddha. Indian traders Firoj, Raja and Naushad were found keeping 300 birds which are illegally trafficked from India. Birds such as Munia, Blossom Headed Parakeet, Baya Weaver and Budgi Gus were kept in small cages and some of them were suffering from serious health problems.

The raid proves once again that Nepal has become a hub for bird smuggling. Each day, traders sell hundreds of birds in major cities of the nation, making a mockery of laws that prohibit trade in birds. A recent report by BCN concludes that the bird smuggle takes place in the absence of a mechanism to rein in the illegal trade and points out that no bird trader has been nabbed in recent history.

The raids end the impunity enjoyed by the traders. On May 5 R&S tipped off the recently established Anti Wildlife Crime Task Force which led to the rescue of six birds of three different protected species. AWNN applauded those involved in the raid and urges the government to improve its policies on and monitoring of wildlife breeding.

Manoj Gautam, executive member of AWNN, said that the government´s wildlife breeding policy, introduced in 2003, has provided a legal loop hole for traders of CITES-listed species. “The policy allows licensed traders to breed wild animals,” he said. “They misuse the license to poach, breed and smuggle endangered animals. As the government´s monitoring mechanism is weak, the policy has provided a fertile ground for the illegal trade of the CITES-protected species.”

AWNN: "Stop blood sacrifices on Buddha's birthday"

Kathmandu, May 17, 2011 – The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) today, on Buddha Jyanti, protested the mass animal sacrifice conducted by various clans. “Nepal in the past banned blood sacrifices on Buddha’s birthday. As a sign of respect to the Buddha’s teachings and his followers, the government should reintroduce this policy. We urge the clans to replace their annual rituals by vegetarian offerings,” says AWNN.

Today clans such as Khadka, Thapa, Neupane, Ghimire, Rijal, Silwal, and Baskoti organised kul (clan) pujas in places like Hatiban, Thankot and Lamatar, featuring mass animal sacrifices. According to AWNN estimates over 700 animals were killed. Each clan sacrificed around 100 goats.

AWNN urges clan committees to stop blood sacrifices. “Killing innocent beings in the name of god does not make sense, and doing so on Buddha’s birthday makes blood sacrifices even more controversial,” says AWNN.

AWNN reminds the government and clan members how in the 1950’s King Mahendra, in order to honor the Buddha’s precepts against taking life and clouding one’s mind, decreed a ban on blood sacrifices and the closure of meat and alcohol shops on Buddha Jyanti. By doing so he followed one of emperor Ashoka’s declarations, displayed on a stone pillar in Lumbini. The ban is still observed to a large degree throughout Nepal, with Kathmandu Valley as the main exception.

AWNN targets various clan sacrifices, which according to campaign coordinator Santosh Khatiwada have become controversial at this modern time and age. “Abolishing blood sacrifices and introducing alternative sacrifice rituals using fruits and vegetables will reestablish kul pujas as a meaningful and fun experience,” says Khatiwada.

Last year AWNN requested the Rana Panchayan Samiti to cancel its biannual animal sacrifices during Buddha Jyanti. Nevertheless the Rana clan last year killed hundreds of goats at a Kul Puja ritual at a temple in Tripureshwo. The ritual was described as a ‘blood bath’ by AWNN campaigners.

AWNN campaigns against frog dissection and animal experimentation

The Animal Welfare Network Nepal has launched a campaign against the breeding of Rana Tigrina frogs for dissection and animal experimentation in educational institutes in general. Frogs reared by wildlife expert Laxmi Manandhar are supposed to be sold to institutes in Nepal for dissection by students. AWNN has send letters to the editor of Kathmandu Post and to various institutes in Nepal.

AWNN argues that animal experimentation by medical institutes is inhumane, useless and a waste of money. “The truth is that testing on animals is just plain bad science which harms humans and other animals alike. In South Asia, progressive universities have changed their syllabi and opted for humane, scientific teaching methods. In 1997, the Delhi High Court ruled that every student has the right to a humane alternative to dissection. Alternatives, which range from anatomically correct models of human organs to sophisticated computer programmes, are readily available. Virtual frog dissection software can be downloaded for free from the internet. Nepal should follow suit and introduce enlightened and humane ways to educate their students,” AWNN says.

The network urges colleges to stop the dissection of frogs, as well as any other kind of animal experimentation. We also urge the government to make sure breeding projects are carried out only by experienced professionals and do not promote animal cruelty. Instead, wildlife breeding should benefit endangered species and society as a whole.

AWNN applauds raid on protected birds

On May 5, AWNN member Roots and Shoots Nepal tipped off the recently established Anti Wildlife Crime Task Force which led to the rescue of six birds of three different protected species. The raid took place at a bird breeding centre run by Bishwo Raj Joshi in Thankot, Kathmandu. The birds were handed over to the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel of Lalitpur. AWNN applauds those involved in the raid and urges the government to improve its policies on and monitoring of wildlife breeding.

Three African Grey Parrots, one Talking Maina and two Alexandrine Parakeets were rescued from Joshi´s breeding centre. The team comprising representatives of Roots and Shoots Nepal, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN), Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN) and government officials also arrested an Indian national, MD Chhotu, for breeding Talking Maina.

Renowned guru supports anti sacrifice campaign

Renowned Indian spiritual guru Ravi Shanker on May 4 visited Lumbini, the birth place of Gautam Buddha, where he denounced animal sacrifice. He urged the public to abandon animal sacrifice by giving up the misconception that the deities would be appeased with it. "Killing animals in the name of sacrifice is a sin," Ravi Shankar said, adding that the beast within the humans should be sacrificed instead.

Addressing a mass of thousands at the Siddhartha Stadium in Bhairahawa, the champion of Art of Living Foundation said Nepal should be developed into the centre of world’s peace by resolving the existing crisis in the country.

People from different parts of western Nepal including Chitwan, Kaski and Dang, and from the Indian cities adjoining Bhairahawa had gathered at the stadium to attend the Maha Satsanga.

AWNN upset about government supported Nuwakot sacrifices

Kathmandu, April 20, 2011 - The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) is upset about cruel animal sacrifices taking place at Nuwakot festival. Here a priest drinks the blood of over fifty dying animals. The government supports the festival by providing four buffaloes and twelve goats. The campaigners argue that drinking animal blood is extremely cruel and dangerous for humans.

In the night of April 19, over fifty animals are sacrificed at the Jalpa Devi temple in Devighat, Nuwakot, in a very cruel manner. Eighty year old drunk priest Hari Man Singh Dangol takes the animals in his lap and starts slicing the neck part of the animals. While the animal is dying he drinks the blood that spews out of the vein.

The festival is supported by the government. Some hundred children witness the event.

AWNN campaigner Santosh Khatiwada noticed how the animals were still crying and struggling while their blood was being drunk. “It takes more than five minutes for the animal to die. It is a terrible event to witness, and the children present seemed as shocked as I was.”

“The government still supports this Jatra by providing four male buffalos and twelve male goats,” says shopkeeper Gokul Chitrakar. This time twenty goats, two sheep, five buffalos and countless chicken were sacrificed.

“Drinking animal blood is dangerous as different zoonotic diseases can be transmitted, some of whom are fatal. The government should ban this practice on the basis of public health and animal cruelty,” says Dr Sudeep Koirala, veterinary manager with Animal Nepal.

Most Devighat locals do not seem keen on the blood drinking event “It is a fake act; we don’t believe the priest really drinks the blood of so many animals. We better stop this part of the festival altogether,” said one local devotee.

'Include animals in constitution,' says AWNN

Kathmandu, March 14, 2011 – The Animal welfare Network Nepal has requested Mr. Nilambar Acharya, Chairman of the Constitutional Committee, to include animals in the upcoming new constitution of Nepal.

AWNN has suggested a sentence for the constitution to provide a legal status for animals. The sentence reads: “This constitution has addressed the welfare status of all animals including wild and domesticated.”

According to AWNN executive Manoj Gautam the committee chairman is aware of the importance of the animal welfare for Nepali society and is positive about including animals in the constitution.

“Animals are important for our economy and society. If they are included in the constitution this will be the first important step to provide animals with a legal status,” says Santosh Khatiwada , Campaign Coordinator at AWNN.

Nepal is one of the few countries without an animal welfare law. AWNN has prepared a draft Animal Welfare and Protection Act which will promoted through lobbying and sensitization at different levels of society, including government, media, civil society and veterinary organizations.

AWNN very concerned about jumbo abuse in cruel sports

In a recent write up in The Kathmandu Post (The Other Side of The Story, TKP, 2 January 2010) Prateebha Tuladhar reported on abuse of elephants, bulls and horses taking place during the International Elephant Race and Jumbo Pageant. The event was organised by Nepal Tourism Board and the Elephant Management Committee from December 26-28 in Sauraha.

Tuladhar reports how bulls and horses were forced to race with heavy cards. Elephants were mercilessly beaten with ankush (goads) and that flecks of blood could be seen on the heads of the young racers. "How do we know that the scars on the elephants, the sad eyes of the bulls and the starved frames of the horses will go unnoticed?" Tuladhar asks the reader.

The Animal Welfare Network Nepal is very concerned about the welfare of the elephants, bulls and horses involved in what are becoming frequent events in Nepal but what are universally known as ‘cruel sports’. Misusing elephants to attract more tourists is not only inhumane, it will also backfire as tourists increasingly chose responsible and animal friendly practices.

Dressing up elephants and forcing them to race and play polo or football, using methods such as hitting their sensitive parts with ankush, is something we strongly discourage. Already the Animal Welfare Network Nepal receives countless emails from tourists who are concerned about the training and management of captive elephants in Nepal. One tourist was shocked to find that calves at the government breeding center are trained by using inhumane methods including fire, loud noises and ankush. Merciless hitting with sharp tools, as took place during the recent event, will create an international outcry which will backfire on the whole industry.

We strongly advice the government and safari entrepreneurs to get their act together, increase the protection of elephants both in the wild and in captivity and set welfare standards with strict monitoring. If not Nepal will be internationally condemned for dishonoring the most majestic of its species: the Asian Elephant.

Kathmandu, December 10, 2010 – Thousands of Nepalese stray puppies have been sold as ‘Himalayan breeds’ in India in the past decade. This was found when Animal Nepal and Roots and Shoots exposed the illegal trafficking of Nepalese dogs to India by rescuing 37 puppies in one raid, and 5 puppies in a second raid last night. The puppies were destined for Sonepur Mela, Asia’s largest animal fair, held annually in Bihar. The organisations call for stricter law enforcement and request Nepalese families to come to the rescue by adopting one the puppies.

Animal welfare groups for some time suspected that illegal trafficking of Nepalese puppies to India was going on but were unable to expose the trade. Traders collect stray puppies from the streets of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts and promote them as special Himalayan breeds in India. It is estimated that in the past decade thousands of mixed breed dogs have been sold as pure breeds across the border. Exporting any life animal without official documents is illegal under Nepalese law.

Traders Mohammed Sagir, Aka Kallu Miya, Mohammed Ali and Mohammed Nasin, when reporting at the police, said that in the past years they were never asked any questions by Nepalese or Indian authorities. Some of the traders were arrested for bird smuggling in the past but were released as the police deemed the confiscated bird species not important enough for prosecution.

The puppies are cramped in mesh wire cages and transported on top of public buses from Kathmandu to Sonepur in Bihar via Malangala in Siraha. “The puppy trafficking, apart from being illegal, is an extremely cruel business. The majority of puppies are no longer alive when the consignment arrives in Sonepur. They die due to cold, weakness and a lack of food. Most puppies are not properly weaned and don’t stand a chance in the first place,” says Manoj Gautam from Roots and Shoots Nepal.

Last night 37 puppies were rescued from a bus ready to depart from Kalanki bus station while five more were taken from the traders'. They are presently being treated at Animal Nepal’s Chobar Sanctuary. According to Managing Veterinarian Dr Surendra Basyal the condition of the puppies is appalling. “Some of the puppies are properly weaned. Some are as young as three weeks. When we opened the jute covered cages the puppies were totally wet from sweating. One was squeezed to death. I cannot imagine that any of them would have survived the long journey to Sonepur.”

Volunteer directors Pramada Shah and Lucia de Vries request the public to come to the rescue by adopting a puppy. “The popularity of Nepalese stray puppies in India shows that Nepal’s mixed breeds are as handsome as any pure breed,” they argue.

Roots and Shoots in the past has exposed the growing bird trade in the region, including the trafficking of protected owl species. “The Nepalese dog export in fact funds international bird trafficking. Traders use the stable income from dog sales to buy protected, rare birds and embark on riskier forms of trafficking,” says Manoj Gautam.

Nepal is one of the few countries in the world without an animal welfare law. The breeding and selling of companion animals goes unmonitored and is conducted mostly by unregistered companies.

AWNN commemorates Gadhimai Festival; launches grassroots campaign

On November 24 and 25 representatives of AWNN commemorated the ‘world’s largest animal sacrifice’ which took place at Gadhimai Festival a year earlier. They did so by lighting candles in the memory of each animal killed. The network also announced a grassroots movement in Bara and Parsa districts to promote vegetarian sacrifices during the next Gadhimai festival, scheduled for 2014.

"I felt at peace for the first time after witnessing some of the gruelling killings a year ago," said AWNN President Pramada Shah after the lighting of 250,000 oil lamps at the Gadhimai temple. "What made me feel even better was that the priest who presided over the killings this time conducted our ritual," added Shah. Chief priest Mangal Chaudhary helped the campaigners to make vegetarian offerings to the image of the goddess Gadhimai and presided over the 'lakh batti balne' (lighting of lamps) ritual. "I don't actively motivate people to kill animals, but I can't stop them when they come here to do so," the priest argued. He however promised to support the Stop Animal Sacrifice campaign 'in any way I can'.

According to Shah the ritual needed to take place: "In our culture we remember living beings by lighting lamps. It is also a way to purify the area, which was awash with blood a year ago and continues to see regular animal sacrifices," says Shah.

Executive member Manoj Gautam together with campaign coordinators Santosh Khatiwada and Krishna Singh facilitated two interaction programmes in Bara and Parsa districts. Apart from State Minister Karima Begum the meetings were attended by political and religious leaders, business people and representatives from the District Administrative Office, Department of Livestock , various NGOs and the media.

State Minister Begum said animal sacrifice cannot be stopped but promised her support to the campaign.

AWNN with the help of local NGO Janahit Sanchar will launch a 4-year social mobilisation programme to support a grassroots movement against animal sacrifice.

Competition winners feted

On World Animal Day (WAD) the winners of the article writing competition 'Stop Animal Cruelty' were feted with cash prizes. The winner's article was published in Kantipur Daily.

The competition was announced on WAD 2009. A jury consisting of Anustha Shrestha (radio RJ), Mahesh Sharma (Roots & Shoots representative) and Prerana Marasini (journalist) announced the winners.

The first prize went to Bishwa Poudel. The jury describes his article as 'highly inspiring, broad-minded and providing an introduction to some of the world's varied forms of animal cruelty'. Jury member Anustha: 'Bishwa talks about the cruelty faced by animals in multiple sectors. He explains how animals are being sacrificed in the name of culture, using the examples of Dasain and Gadhima festivals, He shows how animals are being ill treated in the name of sports and entertainment all over the world. Definitely deserves the first prize.'

The second prize went to Sambinda Rajbhandari Shrestha. The jury says her story about the rehabilitation of an injured pigeon is 'heartfelt, original and well written'. Jury member Anustha: 'The bonding between the bird and the author is beautifully portrayed. The writer has also raised the issue of the killing of thousands of birds due to bird flu. The story can easily be turned into a children's story.'

The third prize was handed over to Govinda Subedi. The jury appreciated the story on animal sacrifice as it encourages the readers to think of the animals who will be killed in the name of god.

The consolation prize went to Roshan Shestha. Roshan wrote a poem instead of an article. However the jury felt the young participant deserves encouragement for writing a heartfelt poem about animal suffering.

The deadline for the Poster and Photo competition have been extended, as there were insufficient contributions.

Goddess leads devotees in vegetarian sacrifice

Kathmandu, October 7, 2010 – Today the goddess Kali demonstrated a group of fifty devotees how to sacrifice in a Symbolic Puja at Dakchhinkali Temple. “I do not need animal blood. I am happy with fruits and vegetables so please offer me vegetarian sacrifices,” the blue-tongued goddess said before slashing a pumpkin into half.

The devotees, a gathering of social and animal rights campaigners, followed the fierce looking goddess Kali (played by actor Durga from Shilpee Theater) in sacrificing pumpkins and coconuts, in a ritual that according to the campaigners has a firm basis in the country’s ancient traditions.

The puja was organized by AWNN as part of a novel campaign against animal sacrifices that take place during Dasain festival.

Earlier this year AWNN launched a 5-year campaign against animal sacrifice and cruel sports. The homegrown movement was born during Gadhimai festival which saw the killing of some 200,000 animals in the span of 24 hours in November 2009. The campaign is supported by a growing number of spiritual and society leaders, including the well known comedian duo MAHA.

The network is requesting the President, Prime Minister, army and police to cancel state funded animal sacrifices during Dasain. “Nepal is the world’s key implementers of animal sacrifice, a practice that promotes superstition and violence, drains the poor and prevents Nepal from becoming a truly advanced country. Decapitating a bleating buffalo or goat should not be the symbol of the Nepali civilization,” AWNN urges.

AWNN also argues that a vegetarian diet improves people’s health and helps to save the planet. It is believed that 90% of random meat samples in Kathmandu are contaminated with bacteria such as salmonella. As a result, the majority of typhoid cases in city dwellers are caused by infected meat.

Comedian duo MAHA speaks out against animal sacrifice

Kathmandu, August 26, 2010 – Comedian duo Madan Krishna and Hari Bamsha today requested communities such as Khokana to stop cruel blood sacrifices. “It is ignorance that leads to cruel killings. Therefore let’s stop blood sacrifices and restore our dignity,” the comedians said.

Rituals such as the one taking place at Khokana festival have a major impact on children, according to the comedians. “Some children are made to believe that violence is approved of by society, while other children feel deeply hurt when they see grownups mishandling a living being.”

The comedians have joined a campaign led by Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN). The network earlier this week requested the organizing committee and VDC of Khokana to develop an alternative for the cruel ritual involving the biting to death of a she goat in a pond.

Animal welfare campaigners were relieved to notice that today’s ritual was celebrated in a less cruel manner: the goat was drowned first and the animal was not bitten by humans.

Kathmandu, August 25, 2010 – The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) has requested the organizing committee and VDC of Khokana to develop an alternative for the cruel ritual involving the tearing apart of a baby goat in a pond. Khokana festival will be celebrated tomorrow on August 26.

During the festival a 4-6 months old she-goat is thrown into a pond where nine young men, one from each ward, attack it and bite it to death. The one who ultimately kills the goat is named the ‘hero’ and leads a dance procession. Khokana VDC sponsors the festival by contributing around NRs 100,000.

Seven animal welfare organizations coordinated by AWNN have send letters to the organizing committee and Village Development Committee requesting them to introduce alternatives. “The festival will have so much more appeal when no animal cruelty takes place. Khokana can actually taking a leading role in introducing non-violent rituals which will appeal to everyone, including children and tourists,” says Mahesh Sharma, Campaign Coordinator at AWNN.

According to AWNN the ritual started when people accidentally drowned in the pond. At first fruits and vegetables were offered and when this was not effective, a baby goat was drown. “Only since a few years the ritual has turned into a ‘blood sport’, in which youth are encouraged to bite a live animal to death,” says Sharma.

AWNN argues that the present Khokana festival is not part of Nepal’s heritage, religion or culture. Sharma: “Rituals that involve extreme cruelty generally have been introduced to attract more visitors and business. These are controversial developments as many community members are in fact against them. Community events and pujas should be a harmonizing, enjoyable experience for all members, including children. Introducing alternative, non-violent forms of sacrifice rituals will re-establish festivals as meaningful, fun and positive experiences.”

AWNN earlier this year launched a 5-year campaign against blood sacrifices and cruel sports. According to the campaigners animal sacrifices harm society as a whole as it signals and normalizes insensitivity in children who can become numb to the suffering of living beings, and it is also known to influence certain people to commit violence on other humans. “Now that the armed conflict has ended Nepal needs peaceful practices that educate the next generation for a harmonious society,” AWNN says.

Demonstrators demand truth about released monkeys

Kathmandu – August 22, 2010 – A group of 25 lawyers and animal welfare campaigner today held a demonstration against the random release of monkeys once destined for US labs. The demonstrators handed over a survey report of the release sites and a list of questions to a representative of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation.

Demonstrators carrying monkey masks and play cards chanted slogans like ‘Stop wildlife dumping’, ‘Monitor and manage released monkeys’ and ‘Respect international laws and regulations’. The rally was organized by Roots and Shoots Nepal, Student Law Society and Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN).

According to lawyer Sudeep Pokharel, Nepal, by randomly releasing captive monkeys at Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park has violated various internations regulations. Pokharel says he is disturbed by the fact that the government's actions result in the death and ill health of monkeys that were saved from a life of misery in US labs. “We want the government to develop a framework for the scientific and humane rehabilitation of wildlife, including monkeys,” Pokharel argues. The Student Law Society has filed a writ against the ad hoc release of the lab simians.

The demonstrators handed over the survey report ‘Death in the Forest’ and a list of questions to a spokesman of the Department. The report, published by AWNN, concludes that the random release of over 200 captive monkeys in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park has not only led to the death of at least 40 simians but has also greatly increased human-monkey conflict. The network urges the government to take immediate action.

According to Santosh Khatiwada from Roots and Shoots Nepal, the public has the right to know how many monkeys have been released when. “We demand answers to our questions, like why the government did not inform anyone about the releases, if any monitoring is taking place, the cause of death of around 40 monkeys, the health status of the surviving monkeys and how the problems faced by locals will be mitigated,” says Khatiwada.

The demonstration was held at a time when members of the Pashupatinath Area Development Trust claim that 100-150 monkeys have been released in Bhandarkhal forest near Gaushala. The monkeys are in bad health and create havoc in the community.

“The authorities are entirely to blame for the situation and the fate of the surviving monkeys lies in the hands of the authorities,” says Mahesh Sharma, campaign coordinator at AWNN.

The demonstrators worry that if no action is taken, crop raiding monkeys will be killed by locals. “The government opted against scientific release despite countless warnings from animal experts. The government must get its act together to prevent more monkey deaths and increased human-monkey conflict,” argues Sharma.

AWNN conducts Zoo Check in Central Zoo, Kathmandu

Kathmandu, August 2, 2010 - AWNN presently conducts a survey of the Central Zoo in Nepal. The outcomes have shocked the researchers. "We knew the zoo had problems but we did not expect the outcomes to be this bad," says Mahesh Sharma.

The inner city Central Zoo was build as a private zoo by late Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher in 1932. Some of the enclosures date back to this time. "The bear enclosures have been out of date since at least a century. They are completely stressed out by their living conditions and overwhelming number of visitors. The authorities must take immediate action to save the bears," says Sharma.

According to the researchers other species such as rhesus monkeys, small mammals such as wild cat, jackal and clouded leopard and different bird species are extremely stressed and show abnormal behaviour due to inhumane conditions.

AWNN uses check sheets developed by WSPA and ACRES. Many enclosures fail automatically because the enclosures are totally barren, prevent normal movement and/or consist of cement flooring only.

The zoo houses some 780 species including the critically endangers white-rumped vulture and Chinese alligator and six endangered species: Asian elephant, royal bengal tiger, one horned rhino, wild buffalo, gharial and yellow headed turtle.

In the absence of a wildlife rehabilitation center or orphanage, the zoo, despite severe space constraints, has been forced to accept rescued wildlife from across the country, including large mammals.

In 2009 the zoo witnessed an alarming death rate. 191 animals died, including Himalayan Black Bear and Sloth Bears. The zoo each year greets over 1 million visitors, the majority of them school children.

According to AWNN the only solution to the zoo's many problems is to create a new zoo outside the city. The present zoo can be transformed into an educational park with farm animals. The government announced the establishment of an 'international standard zoo' in 2008 but little progress has been made.

Dancing bear Rubina safe and happy in Indian sanctuary

Kathmandu, June 15, 2010 - Dancing bear Rubina, rescued by Roots and Shoots Nepal in coordination with Chitwan National Park authorities, has safely arrived at the Agra Bear Sanctuary run by Wildlife SOS. AWNN with the help of Indian activist Maneka Gandhi successfully campaigned for the repatriation of Rubina.

While in India the cruel custom of forcing trained bears to dance has been wiped out, the cruel 'sport' continues in Nepal. Rubina was one of the five to ten dancing bears active in Nepal, traveling with her owner from village to village, starring in a show featuring bear and snake dancing, as well as lucky charms.

Rubina after her rescue was kept by the warden of Chitwan National Park. AWNN realised that rescued bears like her need specialized care as they normally suffer from problems such as malnutrition, damaged feet and worm infestations. Nepal at present cannot offer specialised care.

AWNN's campaigners Mahesh Sharma and Lucia de Vries published a plea in The Kathmandu Post to save Rubina's life by sending her to a special sanctuary in India (see http://www.ekantipur.com/the-kathmandu-post/2010/03/26/Expression/A-cruel-tune/206589/). Today the adult sloth bear arrived at the Agra Bear Sanctuary. She is kept under observation before being introduced to other rescued dancing bears.

After a life marked by abuse and torture, Rubina will be able to retire with grace. We trust the medical care, nutritious food and, last but not least, the company of other bears will ensure that Rubina's health and spirit will recover soon.

Report: “Random monkey release causes conflict and death”

Kathmandu – June 30, 2010 – The random release of over 200 captive monkeys in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park has not only led to the death of at least 40 monkeys but has also greatly increased human-monkey conflict. That is the conclusion of a survey carried out by the Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN). The network in a report called ‘Death in the Forest’ urges the government to take immediate action.

AWNN in a recent survey has found that the random release of at least 210 captive rhesus

monkeys at Shivapuri Nagarjuna National Park has led to great problems for both humans and monkeys.

People living in and around the park are deeply dissatisfied with the releases and claim that hardly any monitoring is taking place. According to reports the numbers of monkeys inside the park has increased with at least 300 percent. People face a high increase in crop raiding and aggression from monkeys. In some VDCs people are forced to guard their crops day and night.

The monkeys have little fear of humans and seem to suffer from hunger, thirst and distress. Some have unnatural food collection habits and do not have basic survival skills.

“The authorities are entirely to blame for the situation and the fate of the surviving lies in the hands of the Minister,” says Mahesh Sharma, campaign coordinator at AWNN.

The government opted against scientific release despite countless warnings from animal experts. Local communities were not informed or consulted. At least two monkeys have already been killed by angry people. Complaints and requests for compensation of the local communities are not taken serious. AWNN expects that more monkeys will be killed by humans if the government does not act.

AWNN urges the government to take immediate action to prevent more monkey deaths and increased human-monkey conflict. “These monkeys have suffered enough when they were in captivity. They need to be taught survival skills and generally prepared for a life in the wild.” says Sharma.

AWNN also urges the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) in Texas, USA (the original destination of the monkeys) to take up its responsibility. Sharma: “Until now SFBR has shown a total disregard for the lives of Nepalese primates. SFBR must offer help to ensure that the monkeys once destined for biomedical research are treated humanely and are rehabilitation according to international guidelines.”

The network urges government to publicise the cause of the monkey deaths, to recapture the surviving monkeys and provide treatment to sick individuals. AWNN also urges the government to implement a scientific rehabilitation programme in cooperation with animal welfare organisations and other stakeholders. The campaigners support claims for compensation made by local communities inside the park.

SC issues show cause over release of monkeys

KATHMANDU, June 20: The Supreme Court today issued a show cause notice to the government over the release of rhesus monkeys from Lele Research Center to Shivapuri National Park.

As per the order, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation and Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation will have to furnish clarification over the government´s decision.

A Public Interest Litigation was filed by the Law Students Society of Nepal (LSSN) against the release of genetically modified primates into the park on Friday. The move is supported by AWNN.

The applicants have argued that the release of 263 monkeys is in violation of national and international environmental laws and principles regarding biological diversity conservation. They have also said that the release violates people´s constitutional right to safe environment and health.

The applicants have requested the court to issue mandamus in the name of respondents to capture all released monkeys and rehabilitate them by adhering to the internationally recognized guidelines and by applying precautionary measures.

They have also requested the court to issue a directive in the name of respondents to draft and issue necessary rules, guidelines and policies to regulate future cases of wildlife rehabilitation.

AWNN saddened by mass sacrifice on Buddha's birthday

Kathmandu, May 27, 2010 - AWNN is deeply saddened by the fact that despite its protests, countless animals were sacrificed today on Buddha Jyanti

Today the Rana clan alone during its annual Kul Puja sacrificed some 1000 goats at its Thapathali temple.

The Rana clan was one of the groups that received a letter from AWNN, requesting its members not to kill animals on Buddha's birthday. In a press release the network requested temples and clans to avoid blood sacrifices, claiming that "alternative sacrifice rituals will be welcomed by Buddhists and Hindus who oppose animal sacrifice." Buddha's birthday is widely celebrated in Nepal, by Hindus and Buddhists alike.

A day before the festival, members of AWNN put up a banner at the main gate of the Rana temple, saying "Let's End Animal Sacrifice and Let's Promote Vegetarian Offering Instead".

Recalls campaign coordinator Mahesh Sharma: "Today when we entered the temple we were shocked to witness the killings of some 800-1000 goats. It is unbelievable to see so many innocent creatures being killed in the name of culture and worship. We returned home with a heavy heart."

Sharma was encouraged by the fact that every participant noticed the banner: "Those who sacrificed animals today at least know that there are many people within their own community who are against this tradition. I hope they will realize in time how inappropriate blood sacrifices are and that next time they will choose non violence offerings."

No animal sacrifice on Buddha's birthday please!

Kathmandu, May 25, 2010 – The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) requests temples and clans which sacrifice animals during on Buddha’s birthday to make vegetarian offerings instead. Buddha Jyanti this year will be celebrated on May 27.

According to AWNN animal sacrifices are common during Buddha Jyanti. Different clans on this day celebrate their annual ‘kul puja’ or community worship while in different temples the practice of animal sacrifice continues as usual. “Killing innocent beings on the day when Buddha’s birthday is being celebrated in Nepal makes the sacrifices even more controversial,” argues AWNN.

The seven animal welfare organizations coordinated by AWNN argue that on Buddha’s birthday alternative sacrifice rituals will be welcomed by Buddhists and Hindus who oppose animal sacrifice. “We trust priests and clan committees do not want to hurt the sentiments of their countrymen and fellow clan members,” AWNN says.

AWNN earlier this year launched a 5-year campaign against blood sacrifices and cruel sports. The network already requested the army and police to abolish state-funded animal sacrifices.

AWNN targets various clan sacrifices, which according to campaign coordinator Mahesh Sharma ‘have become controversial at this modern time and age as many clan members are in fact against blood sacrifices’. Sharma argues that clan pujas should be a harmonizing, enjoyable experience for all members, including children. “Abolishing animal sacrifices and introducing alternative sacrifice rituals using fruits and vegetables will re-establish kul pujas as important, fun and positive experiences.”

Executive members of Thought for Superb Living organised programmes in Arghakhanchi district to convince people not to sacrifice animals on Buddha's birthday. The management of Kota temple, where generally countless animals are beheaded, agreed to sacrifice vegetables and fruits instead of animals.

Kathmandu – May 12, 2010 - The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) is shocked by news reports about the deaths of recently released monkeys in Shivapuri National Park. According to the campaigners the deaths are the outcome of random releases by the government. The authorities opted against scientific release despite countless warnings from animal experts. “The government is entirely to blame and the fate of the surviving primates lies in the hands of the Minister,” says AWNN.

Seven animal welfare organizations coordinated by AWNN argue that the government ignored expert advice to release the monkeys according to international guidelines. “After the widely applauded ban on monkey export, Nepal had a wonderful opportunity to promote itself as a responsible conservationist. Instead it compromised the lives of these sacred creatures by releasing them in a random and careless manner,” says Pramada Shah, President of AWNN.

According to AWNN, experts and campaigners till today are denied access to the captive monkeys and information about them.

The campaigners argue that the government is entirely responsible for the deaths of the released monkeys. “Rehabilitation is a sensitive process in which the monkeys are tested, trained, monitored and carefully prepared for a life in the wild. An ecological impact assessment has to be made of the release sites and local communities have to be included in the process,” explains Manoj Gautam, executive member of AWNN.

AWNN lobbied for the scientific rehabilitation of the captive monkeys ever since the export of simians to US labs was halted in 2009. “We also agreed with the Ministry to be involved in the management of a rehabilitation programme and to bring in the needed technical assistance and funds,” says Gautam.

In October 2009 a letter of intent to rehabilitate the monkeys was submitted to the Ministry of Forestry and Soil Conservation and Department of Wildlife. Since in Nepal expertise in captive monkey rehabilitation is limited, AWNN requested AAP Foundation Holland to provide the much needed technical assistance.

The AAP team however was denied access to the breeding center. “Until today, despite many attempts, animal welfare experts and campaigners have not been able to visit the Lele monkeys nor get the required information,” concludes Gautam.

By releasing the seed monkeys in a random, unscientific manner, the success of a rehabilitation programme is being compromised. In order to prepare captive monkeys for a life in the jungle, the wild caught monkeys are essential to teach survival skills to the offspring. “Forming family groups is a requirement for successful rehabilitation. By releasing the ‘parent monkeys’ the government took an unacceptable risk with disastrous outcomes,” says Gautam.

According to AWNN Nepal might still have a chance to save the remaining captive monkeys. Gautam: “The Minister must immediately facilitate access for experts to visit the breeding center. If enough parent monkeys are left, then scientific rehabilitation is still possible. The sick monkeys in Shivapuri must be treated, local communities must be included and a proper release plan must be developed. The lives of the remaining captive monkeys are in the hands of the Minister.”

AWNN appeals to Nepal police: drop charges against cops

Kathmandu - April 19, 2010 - AWNN in an open letter to Inspector General of Police, Mr Ramesh Chand Thakuri, has appealed to drop charges against cops who refuse to participate in animal sacrifice rituals. The Nepal Police has summoned 80 cops who did not show up for the force's annual sacrifices during Chaite Dasain festival.

The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) appeals to the Nepal Police to honor the sentiments of its officers and a growing number of citizens by replacing blood sacrifices with rituals that are fitting to an inclusive, peaceful society.

In its open letter the network of seven animal welfare organisations requests the IGP "to drop the charges against the 80 cops who rightfully state that taking part in sacrifice rituals is not part of their job description and in fact violates their basic human rights."

The campaigners note that even though Nepal has become a secular, inclusive country, outdated rituals continue to be conducted and subsidized by the State. "Such rituals leave no place for officers who who are against blood sacrifices," argues AWNN.

According to the campaigners, 'decapitating a bleating buffalo or goat should not be the symbol of Nepali civilisation'. "Drawing the blood of innocent animals in fact contradict the mandate of the police which includes promoting peace and protecting the lives and wellbeing of the country’s citizens," the campaigners argue.

Campaigners call for repatriation of dancing bear

Kathmandu – March 25, 2010 - Roots and Shoots Nepal and Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) call for the repatriation of Rubina, a rescued dancing bear, back to India. According to the campaigners Nepal at the moment cannot offer the specialized care rescued dancing bears need while India has four bear rehabilitation sanctuaries.

Cites rules that confiscated animals that are the victim of illegal trade must be returned to their country of origin,” says CITES expert Ravi Aryal. Roots and Shoots Nepal and AWNN argue that Nepal should opt for cross-border cooperation and return rescued dancing bears to India. “India features some of the best Bear Rehabilitation Centers in the world, stretching 160 acres with all the facilities and habitat settings the rescued animals need,” argues Manoj Gautam, representative of Roots and Shoots.

According to Gautam rescued dancing bears need specialized care as they normally suffer from malnutrition, dehydration, damaged feet, gastro-intestinal disorders and worm infestations. “Nepal at present cannot offer such care,” according to Gautam.

Wildlife SOS, an Indian organization active in wildlife rehabilitation, has expressed a willingness to rehabilitate the bear.

On 16^th March, 2010, Roots & Shoots Nepal with the support of Wildlife SOS India rescued Rubina, a female adult sloth bear at Arunkhola, Nawalparasi. While her owners were arrested, the bear was handed over to Warden of Chitwan National Park. Rubina is kept at the National Park office until her fate is decided upon.

The facility where Rubina is currently being held is substandard. The bear enclosure at the only alternative location, the Kathmandu Zoo, fails any international standard. As a result, three out of four zoo bears have died in the near past. “If Rubina is not repatriated to India we fear for her life,” says Gautam.

AWNN appeals to Nepal Army: Stop Animal Sacrifices

Kathmandu, March 22, 2010 - The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) appeals to the Nepal Army to cancel its blood sacrifices, starting this Chaite Dasain. The campaigners argue that animal sacrifices conducted by the army condone state supported animal cruelty. According to the campaigners ‘decapitating a bleating buffalo or goat should not be the symbol of Nepali civilisation’.

In letters to the Chief of Army Staff, campaigners say the time has come to abolish animal sacrifices conducted by the Nepal Army. Blood sacrifices promotes superstition and violence, drain the poor and prevent Nepal from becoming a truly advanced country,” the campaigners argue.

The Nepal Army during Chaite and Bada Dasain sacrifices water buffaloes and goats at the guard houses at Hanuman Dhoka at Kathmandu and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The rites last about two hours and are concluded after the military commander smears each of the banners with the sacrificial blood.

The campaigners argue that these sacrifices condone State supported animal cruelty. “It may be a part of our tradition that the khukuri wielded in the battlefields first had to draw the blood of sacrificial animals. However, our enemies today are not demons. It is superstition, fatalism, poverty and social inequity that plagues our society,” the campaigners argue.

The argument that animal sacrifices are part of army culture and tradition is not a valuable argument to commence these practices, according to AWNN. “Nepal, realizing the adverse effects, has abolished a number of ‘traditions’ in the past, including human sacrifice and widow burning,” the campaigners note.

According the AWNN now is the right time to address the controversial issue of animal sacrifice. The network invites the Nepal Army to show that it ‘indeed is a progressive force in society’ by sacrificing fruits and vegetables instead of animals.

'Include animals in constitution,' says AWNN

Kathmandu - February 10, 2010 - The Animal Welfare Network Nepal calls for better protection of animals under the new constitution and laws of Nepal. The network of animal welfare organizations today organized a workshop with Constituent Assembly members called “Animals and the Law”. All 601 members received an information kit about the subject.

According to the network different due to the weak legal status of animals, various forms of animal cruelty are practiced inside Nepal. “The existing laws lack enforcement due to different loopholes and a lack of commitment. In fact, Nepal remains one of the few countries in the world without an animal welfare act,” said Pramada Shah, President of the network.

Animal rights campaigners in Nepal aim to make animal protection a part of constitution. According to the network governments across the world increasingly ensure the rights of animals in their laws, with the European Union leading the Western countries. “Once animals are given protection in the constitution then the rights of animals will be ensured in different laws,” said campaigners Dr Govinda Tandon, Malika Nepal and Manoj Gautam.

Campaingers deely disturbed by Gadhimai cruelty

Birgunj/Kathmandu, November 26, 2009 – Animal campaigners are ‘deeply upset and traumatized’ by the mass sacrifices that took place at Gadhimai temple on Tuesday and Wednesday. ‘The organizers have violated every single code of animal welfare. Despite worldwide protests they have not introduced a single measure to alleviate the tremendous suffering of the thousands of animals involved’, says spokesperson Manoj Gautam.

A team of campaigners from the Animal Welfare Network Nepal and Anti-Animal Sacrifice Alliance returned to the capital last night. According to the team the public beheading of some 16.000 water buffaloes ranks ‘among the worst examples of animal cruelty in the world’.

The Gadhimai committee, despite countless promises, failed to provide a space where animals could be left for jeevandhan, giving the animals a new leash of life.

The team notes that none of the suggestions made by the Department of Livestock or animal welfare groups have been taken seriously by the organizers. Most animals were imported illegally from India; none was checked by quarantine officers. The animals were transported in haphazard conditions and they were not fed or watered before the sacrifice.

During the killing the animals were left untethered and the organization did not issue instructions for the sharpening of knives, leading to even more unnecessary suffering. The animals were forced to witness the killing of countless other animals before their turn came, including the killing of mother animals in front of their siblings. Also, there were no facilities for the drainage of blood or the timely removal of dead bodies.

Manoj Gautam: ‘The animals were not provided with any water and food in the days before the sacrifice. Many young animals had in fact already died from stress, exhaustion and dehydration before the killings started. Their bodies were left among the live animals.’

The organizers failed to issue rules for the general sacrifices that were carried out randomly in a radius of 3 kilometer of the temple. ‘Everyone could kill anything, with whatever knife or sword. Many animals died an unbearable slow and violent death because the knives were not sharpened properly and the butchers were inexperienced.’

Up to an hour before the public killings of buffaloes started, campaigners tried to convince the organizers to cancel the public killing of water buffaloes and instead pierce their ears to let some blood flow.

According to the team not only the organizers but the government at large should be held responsible for the Gadhimai killings. ‘Not a single government leader has had the courage to speak out against the mass sacrifices. What kind of leader in this time and age wants to perpetuate rituals that promote superstition, drain the resources of the poor and destroy the image of Nepal as an attractive destination?’

Winners competition announced

A jury consisting of Anustha Shrestha (radio RJ), Mahesh Sharma (Roots & Shoots representative) and Prerana Marasini (journalist) today announced the winners of the AWNN article writing competition announced on World Animal Day. The participants were asked to submit a write up with the motto 'Stop Animal Cruelty'.

The first prize goes to Bishwa Poudel. The jury describes his article as 'highly inspiring, broad-minded and providing an introduction to some of the world's varied forms of animal cruelty'. Jury member Anustha: 'Bishwa talks about the cruelty faced by animals in multiple sectors. He explains how animals are being sacrificed in the name of culture, using the examples of Dasain and Gadhima festivals, He shows how animals are being ill treated in the name of sports and entertainment all over the world. Definitely deserves the first prize.'

The second prize is for Sambinda Rajbhandari Shrestha. The jury says her story about the rehabilitation of an injured pigeon is 'heartfelt, original and well written'. Jury member Anustha: 'The bonding between the bird and the author is beautifully portrayed. The writer has also raised the issue of the killing of thousands of birds due to bird flu. The story can easily be turned into a children's story.'

The third prize goes to Govinda Subedi. The jury appreciated the story on animal sacrifice as it encourages the readers to think of the animals who will be killed in the name of god.

The consolation prize goes to Roshan Shestha. Roshan wrote a poem instead of an article. However the jury felt the young participant deserves encouragement for writing a heartfelt poem about animal suffering.

The deadline for Poster and Photo competition have been extended with two months, as there were insufficient contributions.

Gadimai campaign gains momentum

The Gadhimai campaign against the cruel and inhumane killing of hundreds and thousands of animals in the name of religion is gaining momentum.

Local and international media continue to give attention to the 'world's largest animal sacrifice'. Animal welfare groups from all over the world have joined the protest.

A festival where 200,000 animals are killed to please a goddess?This is exactly what -if nothing is done- will happen in November 2009 in Nepal. The Gadimai Festival in Bariyarpur, Bara District, is held each 5 years. The mass sacrifice turns the entire area into a marshy land of blood.

Open letter to Editors and Concerned Citizens

The Animal Welfare Network Nepal AWNN is shocked to hear about yak festivals where hundreds of visitors drink raw yak blood. Can you stop for a moment and think how painful it must be for these innocent creatures to have their necks and bodies pierced and to be drained of blood? This festival or whatever you want to call it is nothing but a show of barbarism. We are astounded that such a great man as Magsaysay award winner Mahabir Pun is promoting such cruel acts in the name of culture.

Humanity as a whole must speak out against cruelty against living beings in the name of religion, culture or health. Mass slaughter of animals in the name of appeasing the gods has been banned in almost every other country in the world but ours. Drinking blood of live animals must be banned. It is not only cruel but also dangerous for health as zoonotic diseases can easily be transmitted, with potentially fatal effects. We call for the authorities to take immediate action.

Over 1000 signatures to 'Stop Donkey Misery in Nepal' handed over

Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) on May 19, 2009 handed over a petition signed by over one thousand people from all over the world to stop donkey abuse to the Joint Secretary at the Ministry for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Dr Hari Dahal.

The petition titled 'Stop donkey misery in Nepal' was signed by 1036 people from countries like Nepal, India, US, UK, Italy, Australia, France, Germany, Norway, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Netherlands, Belgium and others. The purpose of the signature campaign is to raise awareness to stop cruelty on working animals like donkeys. The petition demands concerned authorities and donkey owners to introduce a care system for these animals that suffer from malnutrition, open sores, lacerations, and general neglect.

Members of AWNN also urged the Joint Secretary to implement the Animal Transportation Act and wished to participate in drafting of the Animal Welfare Act. Mr Dahal was positive about these concerns and expressed commitment to take initiative on monitoring the execution of the Animal Transportation Act or the Pasu Dhuwani Mapdanda 2064.

AWNN Chairperson Pramada Shah, after handing over the petition hoped that the ministry would cooperate in raising animal welfare issues and that the Animal Welfare Act would soon be finalised and send to the Parliament.

Dr Jane Goodall at Network Public Talk

The Network was delighted to welcome Dr Jane Goodall on 6 February 2009 at the Patan Museum at a public talk organised by AWNN. Goodall is a most inspiring speaker. Each time she visits Nepal Dr Goodall manages to activate countless people (young and old) to become involved in conservation and animal welfare.

During the talk Dr Goodall handed over the Youth Leadership Award 2008 to Manoj Gautam, Roots and Shoots Nepal country representative and founder member of AWNN. The programme also saw the launch of the documentary 'Brick and Donkeys - Foundation of Abuse' produced by Animal Nepal (watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C22Mg-TFMf4).

During the talk programme AWNN chair Pramada Shah launched the Emergency Animal Treatment Fund. Nabil Bank's CEO Mr Anil Shah handed over a cheque of NRs 25,000 as a contribution.

Network Comes to the Rescue

The conditions of many hundreds of working donkeys in brick kilns in Kathmandu Valley is pathethic. Away from the public eye donkeys are made to carry bricks until they (literally) drop dead. They are underfed, overloaded, and until recently virtually all of them suffered from infections, open sores, malnutrition and dehydration. A significant number of donkeys can't work because they are blind or lame or have given birth. Still, the donkeys owners even force these donkeys to work.

Animal Nepal introduced donkey clinics in December 2008 with the help of volunteer (student) vets from the Himalayan College of Agricultural Science and Technology HICAST. Volunteers build rapport with the kiln managers and donkey owners and started treating the sick and injured donkeys. They also provided preventive health care, including tetanus injections, deworming and mineral/vitamin supplements. The clinics were conducted with the help of local donations.

Different members of the members came to the rescue. SPCAN handed over medicines worth NRs 20.000 to Animal Nepal's vet, Dr Sudip Koirala. KAT offered two training positions for equine vets at the Donkey Sanctuary in Ahmadabad, India. Dr Sudip and one colleague will travel there in September.

1. Coordinate the activities of animal welfare organisations

2. Raise awareness on animal welfare issues among the public

3. Lobby and advocate for animal rights

4. Promote stray dog adoptions

Membership of AWNN has two kinds of membership:

1. Interested individuals (NRs 500 per year)
2. Institutional (NRs 2500 per year)

Anyone is welcome who:
-Is interested in and deals with animal welfare or rights in Nepal and subscribes to the network’s objectives
-In case of organisation is registered with the government of Nepal and
-Whose programmes and missions are consistent with the purposes of the network.

Intending members can submit a membership request in person or on paper. The network will decide upon membership applications through a simple questionnaire.
